Packaging Sustainability

ACCO Brands Australia is a member of the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation. We are continually working with the APCO, other members, customers and suppliers to minimise the environmental impact associated with our packaging material. Our packaging sustainability system includes the use of the Sustainable Packaging Guidelines (SPG) and the Australasian Recycling Label (ARL). Our system provides the framework to meet our commitment to strive to reduce packaging, where possible.

Our packaging sustainability efforts and achievements were recognized in 2018, as ACCO Brands Australia was awarded the APCO Homewares Sector Award for our 2017 performance.

Australasian Recycling Label (ARL)

The Australasian Recycling Label (ARL) is an evidence-based on-pack labelling system for Australia and New Zealand. The ARL helps consumers understand how to correctly dispose of a product's packaging. The ARL is supported by the Packaging Recyclability Evaluation Portal (PREP), an online tool that assesses packaging recyclability in the Australian and New Zealand recovery systems and assists ACCO Brands and other brand owners in determining the correct labelling for a product.

There are three types of classifications available as part of the ARL, recyclable, conditionally recyclable and not recyclable. These classifications advise consumers how to correctly dispose of each separate component of a product’s packaging. In the case of conditionally recyclable there will be further instructions to improve the recyclability of the packaging component.

Further information on the ARL can be obtained on the arl.org.au / arl.org.nz website and Australian Packaging Covenant website.
